Lischana Glacier
Lischana Glacier
3105 m
above sea level is Piz Lischana, a mountain in the Lower Engadine in Graubünden.
2019
saw the first attempt to cover the Lischana Glacier.
92 years
is how long the Lischana Hut has been standing. It is located high above Scuol at an altitude of 250 meters.
Val Lischana
The Lischana Glacier in Val Lischana above Scuol in the Lower Engadine has already suffered a negative mass balance in recent years. However, like many others around the world, this small patch of glacier plays an important role in the local water supply.
The Lischana Hut, which has stood there for 92 years, will lose its water supply as it draws all its drinking water from the Lischana Glacier.
Fleece covers can be used to preserve the glacier patch in Val Lischana. An initial trial with fleece covers was conducted here during the summer of 2019 and yielded positive results.
In this project, the fleece covers are being used for the first time on a small glacier that serves as a water reservoir in a remote area. In addition, the project was carried out in a pristine landscape. This allowed for reliable monitoring of any possible contamination. The aim was to see whether this solution is safe for people living in dry high mountain regions who rely on glacier drinking water supplies.
