Our projects – yesterday, today and tomorrow

Here you will find a summary of the projects that GlaciersAlive has already completed, is currently carrying out, or is planning for the future. For a comprehensive overview with detailed information on all projects, please see our full list of projects here.

2017 – 2019

MortAlive – Research into glacier retreat
Research into the retreat of the Morteratsch Glacier and the development of environmentally friendly methods to slow down the melting of glacial ice.

Since 2016

Student exchange programme: Graubünden & Ladakh
An intercultural exchange of knowledge between two high-mountain regions. Students learn from one another and work together to develop ideas for tackling the challenges posed by climate change.

2020-2023

Snow cable – snowmaking without a ground base
Development of a system capable of producing snow on glaciers using meltwater and without the need for electricity – to act as a protective layer against melting.

Since 2021

Ice Stupa Diavolezza
Annual construction of an ice stupa on the Diavolezza. The project serves the purposes of research, knowledge transfer and as a practical example of innovative water storage.

2023 – 2024

More efficient water management for ice stupas
In collaboration with Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the water flow was optimised to build ice stupas more efficiently and store more water in the form of ice.

2022 – 2025

Microplastic-free fleece for glaciers and snow farming
Development of a sustainable and biodegradable fleece that protects glaciers and snow without leaving microplastics in the environment.

CURRENT & PLANNED

Snow rope – from prototype to practical application
2026–2027
With a new explanatory video and initial practical projects, the snow rope is set to be used at various locations and further developed in the future.

Ice Stupas in Ladakh – Construction and Maintenance
2026–2027
Together with Acres of Ice, we support the construction and maintenance of ice stupas, which serve as winter water reservoirs for the dry months.

New spray heads for Ice Stupas
2026–2027
New technologies are intended to improve the efficiency of Ice Stupa production whilst also making it easy to manufacture and use locally.

The scarcity of water
2026–2028
A film project aimed at raising awareness worldwide of the importance of water – from glaciers and frozen water reservoirs to the challenges posed by water scarcity.

Ice Stupa in Ftan
2027–2028
Another ice stupa is planned for Ftan. Current weather data is being used to assess the climatic conditions required for its successful construction.

Sharing knowledge & raising awareness
Since 2017 and continuing
Through excursions, talks and educational programmes, we help people gain a better understanding of the world of glaciers and show why they are so important for our water supply.

Bernina Glaciers Experience
2026–2027
A new interactive exhibition aims to raise visitors’ awareness of the fascinating world of glaciers and the effects of climate change.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECTS

Snow rope test facility Diavolezza

A ground-independent snowmaking system for glacier protection.

Mastercard Project

Initiated by Mastercard, the GlaciersAlive Foundation is implementing the “Let's protect what is truly priceless” campaign to protect Swiss glaciers.

Fleece Covers

Fleece covers are one of the only successfully implemented methods for conserving snow and glaciers by protecting the underlying snow from melting.

Swiss Ice Fiddlers & Tango Glaciar

The two music groups Tango Glaciar and Swiss Ice Fiddlers have a common goal: to bring glaciers, climate protection, and music into harmony.

Ice Stupa test facility Diavolezza

On February 11, 2021, the new snow rope and ice stupa test facility at the Diavolezza valley station in the Upper Engadine was put into operation for the first time.

Ice Stupa Project

With “Ice Stupa Artificial Ice Reservoir Technology” (AIR), unused water is stored in large ice towers during the winter.

MortAlive

MortAlive is a project that aims to find innovative solutions for covering glaciers with snow.

Lischana Glacier

The Lischana Glacier in Val Lischana above Scuol in the Lower Engadine has already suffered a negative mass balance in recent years.

NESSy ZeroE Snow Lances

With the Swiss-patented “Nessy” system, it is possible to produce snow without using electricity.

Bernina Glaciers Experience

The new exhibition “Amazement and Understanding” is currently in planning and is scheduled to open in fall 2026.
