Our Vision

GlaciersAlive pursues the vision of a world in which the protection of melting glaciers and freshwater reservoirs is not solely the responsibility of science or politics, but rather a collective concern supported by a broad, informed, and committed society.

A world in which people across disciplines, generations, and regions pull together—connected by knowledge, responsibility, and the power of shared solutions.

GlaciersAlive over the years

2015

In the summer of 2015, the first activities around the Morteratsch Glacier began, which led to contact with the Ice Stupa Project in Ladakh.

2016

In fall 2016, with the help of Sonam Wangchuk, the inventor of the ice stupas from Ladakh, Europe's first ice stupa was built in Val Roseg. He traveled from Ladakh to Switzerland for this purpose and supported the organization in building the basic framework.

2017

On April 20, 2017, the GlaciersAlive association (originally Ice Stupa International) was founded in Pontresina.

2020

In 2020, the GlaciersAlive Foundation (originally Cover Project Foundation) was founded in the Engadin region of Switzerland to advocate for glacier conservation.

2021 & 2022

In 2021 and 2022, the new snow rope test facility was tested at the Diavolezza valley station in the Upper Engadin.

2022

In the summer of 2022, more efficient and environmentally friendly materials (Polylacide and wood wool) were tested on the Diavolezza to protect the glaciers.

2024 & 2025

2025

On March 20 and 21, 2025, World Glacier Day and World Water Day were held for the first time. The focus was on the increasing threat posed by glacier melt and its impact on water supplies, communities, and ecosystems.

The newly developed fleece made from microplastic-free PLA material has met the requirements of the 2024 field test.
In spring 2025, 20,000 m² were produced and delivered to five different mountain railway companies in Switzerland,
which protect glacier areas or also engage in snow farming.
